Launch and Relaunch

Eighteen Months Fly By

After a year and half my personal site is finally presentable and ready to launch. For some one who has created dozens of websites and spent most of his career in online marketing this has been more like 15 years coming, but better late than never. That’s also why there are blog posts going back to 2019, I started writing down my thoughts before go live. I hope to have thoughts worth sharing more than a couple times a year going forward!

Additionally ajmaclennan.com is the spiritual successor to my previous consulting site. I do not do enough consulting work any longer to justify an LLC and standalone brand, but you are still welcome to contact me for help.

I have to start with a shoutout to SquareSpace, the platform used to build and host this site. To me, it is the perfect mix of ease with power and customizability. Further the templates, especially this one, hold up over years. Fads in webdesign come ago, but now at 30 years into consumer internet and 10 into mature mobile internet there are some solidly timeless design principles.

You will find it in other places, but my goal with ajmaclennan.com is control my online presence, since I have the ability to do so (most people do, if they put their mind to it). It makes me a little uncomfortable that my LinkedIn or Facebook page come up as the first result when someone is looking for me, and I’ve consulted for people and companies in the past that have seriously disparaging online remarks overshadow their virtues because they could take control of their own online narrative. Also, while I’m no Mike Smith, there are A LOT of Adam MacLennan’s out there so this is my effort to help people who are looking for me to find me.

Lessons Reinforced

There is a lesson in almost anything we do and creating this site was no different.

  • Perfectionism is not a virtue. This did not need to take eighteen months.

  • Sometimes, content is just content. It’s tied with getting away from perfectionism but few (if any) people will ever read the full content of this site, so agonizing over what to include or not include has not been time well spent.

  • Chipping away is okay. I have a regular fear that if I don’t get drive a task to completion, RIGHT NOW, it’s not going to get done, so if I can’t do that why bother starting. Finally getting this site across the finish line is proof that’s not true.
