My Interview Reminders

Hands.jpg

I’m currently exploring interesting new opportunities and as always goes along with that having conversations to evaluate fit, AKA interviews! I think I’m a decent interviewer, if we toss out my rookie year (straight out of college) I’ve got a batting average most baseball players would love once I get to the interview phase. Still I’m very far from the best, learning all the time, and I think it’s nerve wracking for nearly anyone if you care about and really want the position in question.

Anyway, recently I put together a short list of reminders that I go through before any call or meeting I’ve having with a potential employer, and it’s really helping focus conversations. They’re largely a list of bad habits I need to not fall into - I’ve spent enough time on the hirer’s side of the table to know these aren’t a good look, but like all bad habits they’re hard to break. I’m not sure if this list helps anyone else but wanted to share to in case it does.

Adam’s Interview Dos/Don’ts

  1. Do NOT read resume.

  2. Do NOT end with ‘so,’ ‘em',’ or trail off, but if/when it happens do NOT dwell on it and get distracted from the next point.

  3. Control the conversation as appropriate, but do not repeat or get too long winded - clear and crisp.

  4. Answer difficult questions with questions to understand what context the interviewer finds most interesting and buy a moment to ground answer.

  5. Sometimes there are hard stops for time constraints, sometimes decision makers aren’t good interviewers; I OWN the responsibility of getting my own skills, experience and fit across in the meeting time allotted.

I would love to hear your pre-interview ‘reminders’ if you have them! Send me a message here or as this has probably also made its way to social media feel free to leave a comment.
